GUN VIOLENCE AND OWNERSHIP

The following is a comment I made on YELLOWDOG GRANNY’s   post.

It is not about mass shooters, it is not about cop killing black people, it is not about dangerous militia; It is about guns: the availability of guns, the gun slinger attitude, the acceptance of a gun culture.   Yes, there are social, racist, anarchist, police militarization and mental illness factions that need to be addressed.   But it is the guns.  Guns are killing people.

I have lost count of the shootings this week.   Gun violence is now the normal.

I am not against gun ownership; but I am against guns being owned for the purpose of killing people.

The answers are simple; but when half of the United States still believe that Donald Trump is the President in exile, there is no hope of common sense ever bringing about changes.

We don’t need to restrict guns; we need to address the need for them.  The only reason to own a gun in the United states is for hunting and home protection.  With that in mind, rifle and shotgun ownership should require a hunting license.  Pistol ownership should require a gun permit and background check.

Hunting rifles should be bolt-action and a maximum capacity of five rounds.   If you can’t take you prey with five shots you shouldn’t be out in the woods armed.  Shotguns should be single shot, double barreled, or pump with a three-shot capacity.  Handguns should be limited to a six-round capacity.

Military type assault weapons designed specifically to kill humans should be banned.

Police training, armament and use of force are a total other subject that should be addressed separately.

This, of course, is pie-in-the-sky.  No common-sense gun regulation will ever be accomplished in the United States in the 21st century.  We are a gun violent society.

How many hours before the next gun death, or should the question be in minutes?

  1. I read last night about the latest mass murders. People who insist they need assault rifles to protect themselves from tyranny should be declared mentally unfit to own any guns. My observation is that the gun nuts kill those who are opposed to tyranny.
And the ammosexuals who point out that AR is not assault rifle and that the guns are not assault rifles because they are semi automatic...you know, I don't think the victims and their families give a flying fuck about that.
Hunting rifles that look like hunting rifles with 5 shot clips and shotguns with three or even five shot magazines are legit. And if you have to have a pistol, 6 shots is good.
You are right, it will never happen. I am sorry

  2. I just found you via Pipetobacco's blog and I appreciated your straight talk and common sense. And I agree with this post wholeheartedly. My husband and I just had a discussion this morning about assault rifles and how they have no other purpose than to kill as many people as possible in as short a time as possible. I can't think of one good reason for civilians to have them.

I'm off to read more of your blog now that I've discovered you!

  4. If they can put limits on the number of shells a gun can hold when duck hunting, it should be possible to limit the capacity on everything else, too. Some states have done it so it shouldn't be that difficult (other than the complete lack of political will) to make it national. So far nine states and the District of Columbia limit magazine capacity, which, if nothing else, means mass shooters have to stop to reload after the first 10 victims. Chris Rock did a routine years ago in which he talked about the way to limit shooters was to make the ammo outrageously expensive. That's a possibility, too. I know some gun nuts are bitching now about the prices; I say they need to up them a lot more.

  5. An additional thought. Keep in mind that most Americans do not own guns, and of the people who do (approximately 1/3 of the populace) the majority do not possess either an arsenal or assault weapons. The ammosexuals who hoard multiple weapons and buckets of ammo are a tiny, tiny number compared with the country as a whole. Also, a strong majority of the populace wants guns regulated. The 2nd Amendment fetishists are a noisy minority that the rest of us give way too much deference to.

  7. I am horrified at the amount of gun deaths there are in the USA every year. I don't know anything about guns, I will never own one, I don't need one. Whenever I have been on vacation in the USA, I'm always aware that the person in the car next to me might have a gun.

  8. Very well thought out and written. I own rifles for hunting and a .22 pistol that I carry in the forest. Though I am thinking bear spray would be more effective.
I have no use for assault weapons. Totally uncalled for.
