Detroit bankruptcy: an economic system that could not be sustained.  The loss of jobs has resulted in the loss of a tax base.

Detroit is now basically a city of the unemployed.   There is no way the city can pay its way.

If we let Detroit go bankrupt: then what?   What happens?  Crime is rampant and only going to get worse.   Does the city become a war zone?   Detroit is unsustainable so what do we do?

Progressives, of whom I am one, have said that if the money spent in the Iraq war had been channeled to Detroit to build an industry base, then Detroit would be a model city today.  But the problem is that if the government starts taking over the control of all major cities in financial trouble, we become something other than a democracy; something similar to the post Russian revolution.

And, do we want this cabal running our cities?

I'm just asking.

  1. No, we do not want that cabal running our cities nor our goverment. Do I have an answer for Detriot? No, nor Gary, Indiana for that matter...

    Great post!

  2. Detroit is but the result of the bad leadership we have allowed to take over in this country these past 40 years. The rampant capitalistic mindset has pushed it's way into both sides of the aisle and well, Detroit is one result. A predictable result we saw coming yet allowed to happen anyway. As I do not trust the leaders of either party to lead with the citizens best interest in mind, I would rather see Detroit go belly up than have the Feds in there calling the shots.

  3. Regardless of the leadership, good or bad, Detroit is the result of abandonment by companies and white flight. The companies left for cheaper labor areas and those that could afford to left for the 'burbs, so there's no tax base left to support the city. Detroit is now a mere shadow of what it used to be, about half the population with lots of empty lots and neighborhoods.

As for cabals (and yeah the one you show is pretty scary) running things, the one running it now is the governor and his cronies who could care less about Detroit or any of the cities they have taken over or are contemplating taking over. It's all about the "Benjamins" for their cronies and not for those living there.

  4. The Rethuglicans in Lansing want to do to Detroit what investors have been doing for years to private industry: strip the city of its assets while screwing over the average person. They want to get rid of pension obligations (the only income many municipal retirees have; they don't get Social Security)while privatizing places like Belle Isle, which is an amazing public park. Gov. Snyder and his cronies did it to Benton Harbor: installed an emergency manager and almost immediately sold a public park at a bargain basement price to a private developer. I don't think the federal government should bail out Detroit, but it would have been good if the city had been given more time -- it was beginning to turn things around under Mayor Dave Bing.

I think Detroit is going to start to look real good in a few years when all those people and industries that moved South start feeling the full effects of climate change. What's going to happen to places like Phoenix when the water runs out?

  5. I am a Detroit Boy...I lived through the riots in 67...There is an esthetic, a mind set...this is what made me. I have been writing a lot about Detroit and I feel that the current resurgence of racism, dissing the poor, the attitude in the conservative blowhard media towards the unemployed is a very calculated way of inuring the rest of America into accepting the rape of Detroit. They are giving the okay to taking away the pensions, looting the cultural heritage...the collections of the Detroit Historical Museum are already being threatened, the appraisers from Christies have already made their estimates of the contents of the Art Museum, one of the great art museums on the planet. Detroit is a symbol, the cradle of the labor movement, it has always been a focus of socialist politics...the museum contains one of the greatest fresco murals in the world...the pro labor revolutionary mindbending murals by Diego Rivera in the sculpture court.
Detroit is a symbol of what the Koch Brothers and ALEC must destroy as part of their class war. If they do it to Detroit, then it it will be easier to do it to the rest of America. As Lyndon Johnson said, "If you can convince the lowest white man that he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll even empty his pockets for you.”
I'd say that was a pretty good statement as to what is really happening to Detroit and America.

COMMENT: Ben Franklin said, "I imagine a man must have a good deal of vanity who believes, and a good deal of boldness who affirms, that all doctrines he holds are true, and all he rejects are false."
