AAayyyyyyyyiiiii I CAN’T STAND IT!!!!!

I am sick of it!   I turn on the TV and it is the same crap: all I have seen for the last four months is Trump, Clinton, Cruz and Bernie.

We all know who we intend to vote for by now.

Enough!

Seven more months of this shit.   It is driving me fucking crazy….

Super delegates and the electoral college – our vote doesn’t actually elect the candidates anyway.

Give me a break

MY SHIT DOESN’T STINK – TOO BADLY

We are all of the same mentality, and the fact is we do get use to our own stink.

When we first got to Alaska my wife and I both smoked.   The Native kids would come over to the house and tell us ‘your house stinks.’   Native kids are refreshingly unabashed - they say what they think.

Our house was always clean, and at first we were somewhat resentful; because when we visited the Native houses there would be dried, smoked salmon on the counter, a chunk of moose quarter sitting on the floor in a cold corner of the room and perhaps muskrats being skinned in a tub in the kitchen floor.

It is the same thing in politics: our own opinions are reasonable and everybody who doesn’t agree with us is actually stupid or else conniving – looking out for themselves at the expense of others.

So where does that leave us?

I actually do believe that most people that vote Republican are on the down side of the IQ scale – or looking out for their own personal interest at the expense of others.

I know that what I think is true, because my shit doesn’t stink as much as everybody else’s.

HILLARY’S E-MAILS: THE REPUBLICAN RIGHT IS GOING TO GO CRAZY-ER.

EVERYONE’S PRIORITY IS TO COVER THEIR OWN ASS

No one of any position and any intelligence uses e-mail for any correspondence that my effect their tenure.

One of the most tentative employment position is superintendent (and principal) in an Alaskan Native school district: you serve at the pleasure of a school board (and like most school boards) that has no teaching background or experience, but also carry a cultural resentment for non-native administrators.    I worked for a superintendent that was absolutely paranoid about e-mail.   We carried on general correspondence via e-mail; but any situation that had a possibility of being questioned by the school board was discussed only in person or by phone.

I can understand Hillary wanting the control of her e-mails; but with any ambition beyond Secretary of State her private server was bound to ignite a fire storm of criticism – because everything about her is and has always been a subject of criticism and paranoid scrutiny by the Republican Right.

Like a Texas sharpshooter the Republicans will draw a target around this e-mail controversy.

In Logic we study arguments; and the Republicans are using an Argumentum Ignorantian: the premise is true because it has not been proven it is not true.

What it all boils down to is that Republicans hate the Democrats, the Democrats disdain the Republicans and the Independents have no chance.

So there will be weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth; and in the end, half of the country will be dissatisfied with the results of the 2016 election regardless of who is elected  – and life will go on as usual.

SNAFU:  Situation Normal All Fucked Up.

WHY BOTHER - POLITICAL APATHY

I have decided to quit listening to Chris Matthews on MSNBC.   Up until this week my wife and I would tune into Chris while we ate supper.   After his program I always feel like lowering my head and charging into the wall.

And what for?

Why get wound up over something I have absolutely no power to change – and change to what?   The reality is that I have no option but to live through political changes I have no power to influence.

I do not have money enough to buy my Senators and Congress Persons…    Presidential elections are decided not by my vote but by an electoral college appointed by political parties; and as far as a popular vote, it is obvious that that can be, and is being manipulated on a state level by these same political parties.

And even if my vote did count; a small, organized, vocal minority - the Republican minions (also known and the Tea Party and the Christian Fundamentalist – people who are capable of believing that Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin are intelligent choices to govern us) can influence one of the only two viable political parties we have as a choice to the shithouse rat crazy extremes – which in turn can be manipulated by the billionaires whose actual goal is to establish an Oligarchy..

(Wow what a fucking sentence!  I think I will leave it alone and won’t edit…)

I will still listen to Rachel Maddow – she doesn’t rant and rave – and to Bill Maher and Vice on HBO for the WOW factor of crazy shithouse rat political machinations, which are nothing if not entertaining.

Politics to me is a voyeuristic sport, like professional football; something I have absolutely no power or ability to influence.   But, just because I am not capable of participating on any meaningful level does not mean that I don’t find it entertaining.     I just don’t need to get wound up over something I can not control.

Spring is coming to western Maine, the daffodils are up and it is a beautiful overcast day.   I am going to have cereal and blueberries for breakfast this morning while we watch Rachel Maddow’s program that we taped last night.

Have a good day

YOU CAN’T FIX STUPID

According to Rachel Maddow there are people down south (I didn't have to write that – you could have guessed the location) that are blaming President Obama for the snow storms across the southern states.   One of the comments posted on a web site stated that the ultimate military weapon would be able to control the weather; and that in fact the military caused the storms across the south with fake snow (no shit: a chemical snow that can’t be melted with a flame) in order to cover up the bills politicians are passing that are designed to take away our freedoms.

My only question is: how have these people survived for so long?  They are each prime candidates for a Darwin Award.

And, how long before Republicans in Congress have investigations led by Derrell Issa to discover the Presidents culpability in the erratic weather across the country – and particularly the snow down south?

There is no hope for the United States because the idiots have escaped the asylums and the Republicans are taking over the government.

A BUZZARD EGG OMELET #25

“The enemy (crisis) of the moment always represented absolute evil.”
1984 by George Orwell

The new crisis of the day is the health care roll-out.   Everyone’s bowels are in an uproar: both Democrats and Republicans.  But, just like the government shutdown, a few weeks (or months) from now the roll-out debacle will be old news and not worth a comment even by late night comedians.

Of the thirty five percent of the nation that bother to vote: fifty percent of the voters are Democrats; twenty-two percent of the voters are moderate Republicans; and twenty-eight percent of the voters are evangelical Christian retards.  The politicians we have elected are a mirror image of the voters and will again create the next government debacle that will keep us awake at night and our blood pressures elevated – if we allow it.

A little Buddhist perspective: change the things that are in your power to change - accept the things you can not change – and move on.   We would be much happier if we turned off the news and were politically ignorant.  Of course, in this day of technology that is almost impossible.

AWAY FROM POLITICS:

I just picked up a new book A Freudian Slip Is When You Say One Thing But Mean Your Mother, by Gary Blake.

If you enjoy PUNS – often noted as the lowest form of humor – I suggest you can o-pun this book to any page and find a phrase you wish you had coined first.    Of course if you are Rand Paul it won’t matter: you will use it anyway and claim it as yours.

A POX ON THE CONGRESS

It is probably my age.

Or perhaps it is the month of October: a month of ghost and goblins and ghouls – Oh my!

But, the debt ceiling fight and the government shutdown seems totally out of place at this time of the year: a time of harvest – a time of food and friends and fairs and celebration from a year of toil.

I have said before that I can’t seem to get goaded into depression about what seems now to be business as usual in Washington.

People are posting dooms day scenarios on what Rachel Maddow calls the internet machine.

But in reality: all of this will end in just one way.   We will grow old and infirmed or diseased or suffer an accident – and then we all die.  We will get put in the ground, or cremated and have our ashes in an urn – or some not so lovable relative will flush us down the toilet.   Whatever the outcome; when this happens, we won’t care about the debt ceiling or governments or political parties.

And then two or three generations in the future – when we are long forgotten – people will still be exasperated with their politicians; liberals will be disgusted with the way the rich treat the poor; and people with hearts and brains will be protesting the next war.

Things move on but stay the same.    You can’t walk in the same river twice, but the river is still there.  This slipstream of time that man has created – and mankind him and her self – are relevant only in the small self-centered ego of our species.

We change the things we can and accept the things we can’t change.

We are approaching the season of All Hallows Eve when the dead can walk - in our minds.  We should use this season to put things in perspective.

Celebrate this season.
A pox on the Congress.

THE WOEFUL STATUS OF AMERICAN EDUCATION III

SCHOOL BOARDS

We enter the conference room.   The school district superintendent and the school board president are casually seated at the end of the table.  The Superintendent is laughing at something the board president is saying.  As other board members come in and take their seats at the table the superintendent greets each by name and makes some small comment of familiarity.    I look at the Superintendent, a man with a Doctorate in Education and years experience in the classroom and as a school principal, playing the part of a snake-oil politician, obliviously grabbling in supplication to this group that will, in the future, be asked to renew his contract.

I am sitting on the periphery of the table with two other principals.   We are there to report to the board a summary of the month’s accomplishments at our schools.     One of the school board members has a son at my school that was not eligible for a basketball trip because of his grades in language arts.  I already know that I will have to defend the teacher for maintaining her standards for achievement.

The meeting starts and past minutes are read, old business is discussed – usually to do with money issues, or curriculum and testing issues which everyone on the board listens to intently and pretends to understand.  There is a small discussion that perhaps the teachers have too much free access to the copy machines and that they should be limited to a certain number of copies per week.  For new business it is suggested that an electronic key card could be employed to determine who uses the machine most, and controls the use.   The Superintendent immediately agrees.

Next the principals are asked to report.   I give a watered down version of the testing preparations that the teachers and I have spent hours discussing and planning, and a brief description of a cooperative learning field trip that involves archeological research at a traditional Native fishing site on the river.    Everyone listens attentively; then I ask if there are any questions.

Immediately my board member states that a number of parents have complained to her about a particular teacher who seems to have the goal of preventing students from engaging in extra-curricular activities.   I defend my teacher and her academic autonomy to set standards in her classroom.   The rest of the board enthusiastically joins in, unanimously convinced that students should be allowed to play basketball regardless of grades.   I stand by the policy of eligibility and come just short of telling the board member that her son is a pain in the ass in class and thinks that because his mother is a board member he doesn’t have to meet the requirements of the rest of the students.    I look over at the Superintendent and he is frowning.    The board is heated and I am aggravated but maintaining control; but refusing to capitulate.    The Superintendent steps in and says that perhaps the board should consider reviewing the standards that exist among all district schools for sports and other activity and set uniform standards.

A motion is made and passed and the principals are asked to provide an in-depth report of eligibility requirements at each of their schools for the next board meeting.

Elected school boards are the other bane of education.   Like politicians, there is no competency test to qualify a person for the school board.  Members are mainly composed of activist mothers or fathers who readily inform you that they are qualified for the position because they are parents.   (In reality the only qualification for being a parent is the ability to fuck and conceive.)  Other members of the board will be business persons looking for local recognition, and special interest activist (usually religious) looking to insert their agenda into the school.  Occasionally there is a retired school teacher, but as a whole the board is woefully unqualified to set education policies and totally ignorant of the day to day problems involved in educating children in a classroom.

We don’t have civilian elected boards intricately controlling doctor’s protocols and emergency room or operating room procedure; nor do we have elected civilian boards manipulating law firms, psychiatric medicine, physics or chemistry labs, and other disciplines.   Yet, we feel perfectly justified in ‘electing’ non educators to regulate and control the education processes of our school districts.

Congress mandates the curriculum through standards and testing requirements and school boards interfere with the way schools are run on a day to day basis with frivolous and uninformed edicts via their ability to hire and fire school administrators.

We will never improve American schools unless we remove the control from politicians and local school boards and place education professionals in charge.

A VEILED CALL FOR PRESIDENTIAL ASSASINATION.

The following excerpt is from the blog: Squatlo Rant
(I urge you to click the link to read the full post in context.)

“An article on Huffington Post grabbed my attention this morning, and I'm still sitting here shaking my head at the treasonous behavior of some in today's GOP.
A Greene County Republican Committee newsletter that was published back in March included an essay by the newsletter's editor, one Ponch McPhee, in which he called President Obama "America’s Most Biblically-Hostile U. S. President" and urged patriotic Republicans to take up arms against the government should Obama win reelection.
”

I read this as a blatant call for violence against our President.

We often hear TV and talk radio Republican talking heads comparing the extreme right of their party and the extreme left of the Democratic Party as both equally radical in their diatribes.

This is not a correct comparison: the extreme right of the Republican Party has a vitriol that is poisonous and dangerous and does not exist in the extreme left.   The Right Wing of the Republican Party (including the Tea Party) attracts militia nut cases, the KKK, skin heads and other organizations that advocate violence.   This contingent of the party contains unstable gun carrying fanatics capable of killing abortion doctors and shooting politicians they do not agree with.   These people, constantly goaded by Fox News and talk radio, are unstable, delusional and damn right dangerous.

The fact is that the party has moved so far to the right extreme, that the Texas governor (Rick Perry), who publicly announced that he considered Texas secession from the United States as plausible possibility and who has been filmed shooting his pistol into the air at a political gathering, became one of the Presidential candidates for the Republican Party

Equally bothering is that Republican Senators and Congressmen do not come out and denounce this violent rhetoric, and that mainstream TV news shows do not highlight these right wing dangerous psychopaths and tie them to the Party.

The Republican supported newsletter that published this article against President Obama is the type of officially approved rant the feeds the frenzy.

I fear for President Obama every time he appears publicly in the South.

This may sound like an unfair attack against the South.  It is not.  It is an observation.  I was raised in Kentucky and Mississippi and I know the religious ignorance that permeate the south and encourages anti-liberal fanaticism.

This is not the first Democratic President to face such southern racist hatred.

In Stephen King’s novel 11/22/63 King documents the hatred that was publicly displayed in Dallas toward President Kennedy on the day of his assassination.   American flags flew upside down at the airport; and earlier Adlai Stevenson and Lady Bird Johnson had been subjected to a spit shower from a group of protesting middle class housewives.  The Dallas police were complicit by looking the other way.

This is an especially dangerous time for our President as the lunatic fringe of the far right sees his reelection as a biblical offense leading to the destruction of their racially pure America.

If an assassination attempt takes place against the first black President of the United States it will be the lowest point in our National history since the Civil War.

Though they will try to distance themselves, the leaders of the Republican Party will be complicit.   It will be an event that was encouraged by Republican propagandist TV and talk radio outlets (including Fox News and Rush Limbaugh)   and it will have taken place because the leaders of the party encouraged the rhetoric and chose not to denounce the lies and vitriol promulgated against this President.

EXXON FOR PRESIDENT.

According to Citizens United v Federal Election Comission corporations are viewed as persons – with all the same rights to donate to campaigns as any individual.

Romney said that corporations are people.

I am just wondering:
If it can be determined that a corporation was conceived and born in the United States could we apply for a birth certificate, and if so could we run a corporation for President?

This would surely cut out all the red tap.   Why nominate a proxy of big business for President?   Just go for the real thing.

TO MEAT OR NOT TO MEAT - THAT IS THE QUESTION

On a recent post from Blog Fodder, a beef expert from Canada now living in the Ukraine, he discussed the fear, being disseminated by the media, about the safety of the beef meat supply and more especially the addition of ‘pink slime’ into ground beef.

This post is well worth reading, and presents the argument for safely obtaining the maximum food product from a beef animal.   He also makes the passive argument that such hyped scare tactics financially effects beef suppliers and results in businesses failing and the loss of jobs (at a time when unskilled jobs are critical.)

I do concede the point that the maximum product should be extracted from a commercial beef animal (animal suffering and killing aside – we are by nature omnivores and the demand for meat will continue.)

I also concede that with the world population doubling every forty years food production on a commercial scale will soon become the only way to supply the food needs of the countless billions.

I do believe, however, that our food (and water – a need for another post) have had unintended effects on the human body.

When I was young, a boy six foot tall was considered unusually tall.  Today, when I attend the gym at the local university I notice a large percentage of the young men are six-four or larger.  The bulk of many school age children seems massive compared the children of my day; and, I have heard statements that young girls are reaching puberty at a much younger age.    All of this, I believe, is the consequence of growth hormones that are regularly added to the commercial animals that compose our meat supply.

Doctors are concerned about humans building up immunity to antibiotics; and yet eighty percent of our antibiotics are supplied to our meat industry and administered to the animals we eat.

The reality is that people will have to come to terms with the manipulation of food animals in order to produce the maximum weight in the shortest time; the processing of animals to obtain the maximum yield of edible product from each animal; and, we will have to accept the problems and solutions inherent with large numbers of animals being raised in confined or limited spaces.

Because small family farms can not compete with industrial farming, we may be the last generation to appreciate clean, organic, locally raised products available at an affordable price.

Commercial food production is conducted for a maximum profit margin – but it must have independent oversight in order to insure a safe product.  This is a scary thought when today the Republican Party is hell-bent to defund the Food and Drug Administration that is charged with the oversight of our food production.

THE PROBLEM OF THE POOR

Yesterday, Dr. Cornel West and Travis Smiley appeared on the Morning Joe Show on MSNBC.   The discussion was of the class of poor in America that has fallen between the economic cracks and the 22% of American children that are born into and living in poverty.  They made the point that the poor are either ignored or blamed for the economic crisis that the United States is now facing.

Social programs for the poor are being targeted for cuts as a means of bringing our budget under control.   The Republicans would do away with MEDICAID, food stamps, Aide to Dependent Children, support for women’s health clinics and financial support for public schools in the poorest neighborhoods.

To compound this problem Democratic legislators are not vocal against or openly defiant in opposition of the cuts.

Dr. West and Mr. Smiley are adamant that the social support network not only be maintained, but increased, in order to assist this demographic to move into the middle class and become self supporting.

The problem is real, but the answer is not as simple as maintaining and increasing social programs for the poor – though this surely needs to be done.

Being among the poorest in America is a self-fulfilling prophecy.   The days are long gone that a high school graduate, much less a high school drop-out, could make a living wage in a factory or mill.  All jobs today that pay a living wage require some degree of education beyond the high school level.

Children from the poorest neighborhoods and rural communities are often in unstable home environments; environments void of education enrichments, and a parent or parents that do not value, or are unable to contribute to, the education of their children.   Many of these children are street wise and pose problems in school.

The reputation of these lower performing public schools tend not to attract, in most cases, the best and the brightest teachers and administrators.  Many of the students in these schools are socially deficient and some are outright dangerous.  The conditions in most of these schools are substandard and school boards and parents tend to be unsupportive of teachers and administrators.   It is a lose-lose situation for teachers.

The following is a clip posted by a student in a village school in Alaska.   As you can see these schools can pose a difficult environment for teachers and administrators.  This clip takes a minute or two to load and the first half minute is bizarre before you see the school scene, but it is an eye opener and worth viewing to the end.

I will not go into, on this post, the problems faced by the classroom teachers in the difficult venues; and I will note that there are many qualified and dedicated women and men who choose to serve these young people despite the hardships.

But the fact remains; without education beyond the high school level, the parents and the children of these parents are destine to remain on and require social programs to survive.

If we are to solve the self-sustaining culture of the poor, we must have extensive social programs for poor parents that will include training for the parents, child care and comprehensive and well funded preschool, elementary and high school curriculums aimed specifically at the cultural and social environment of the student.

Education is the only answer to lift people from the role of poverty.

Poor people did not cause or bring about the economic decline; this was the results of rich people willing to increase their wealth at any cost.   When attempting to repair the economy the cause must be acknowledged and dealt with.   For Republicans, blaming the poor and cutting social programs amounts to a smoke and mirror attempt to divert attention from their complicity and to avoid breaking their social contract with the rich.

GUN LAWS

There was a discussion on Up with Chris Hayes Saturday morning on gun control.   A reporter that attended the recent NRA convention in St Louis commented that most of those in attendance were old white men; and from conversations he overheard the consistent theme seemed to be that these men needed to be armed because at some time in the future they would have to defend themselves from some imaginary threat.   The liberal consensus on the program seemed to be that the people at the convention were afraid of the rise of minorities and saw that as a threat to their way of life.

I don’t necessarily agree with that.   I have known many men who rode around with NRA stickers on the back window of their trucks.   None of them were afraid – but all of them entertained a fantasy of Armageddon: a time of a breakdown of law and order when they could emerge, regardless of their age or lack of physical prowess, with their guns blazing to become the hero and powerful leaders of their imagination.  In this scenario they all see themselves as the gun slinger that young girls would cling to (note: in their fantasies they do not liberate the old ladies in the rest home, but the young girls in the college dorms.)

Many of the people that go into police work are of the same ilk.   In high school  they were the prey of the alphas and as marginal students were lost in the back of the room; but with a badge of authority and a gun on their hip they achieve the longed for identity of macho.  The permission to carry a gun and the authority to shoot transforms the sexually insecure male into an alpha want-to-be.

Now, here we intersect with the Concealed Carry and Stand Your Ground Law.   Thousands of would-be alphas are walking around armed looking for a chance to live out their fantasy of being feared and admired because of their ability and readiness to kill with a firearm.

In the old 1950 novel Battleground when a recruit would call his rifle a gun the DI would make him grab his crotch with his left hand and hold out his rifle with his right hand and repeat “This is my rifle and this is my gun – this is for fighting and this is for fun.”  I truly believe that gun mania is a substitute for lack of sexual prowess.

In the military I was on the station pistol team and qualified to compete at All Navy competition, but could not attend because of deployment schedule.  I was awarded both expert rifle and expert pistol ribbons.   I do not have a concealed carry license and do not need one.  I know the difference between my rifle and my gun and don’t need to carry one to compensate for the other.

A BUZZARD EGG OMELET #10

OK, I get it – and I empathize:  Women have always been subjugated by men.   They are portrayed by religion as sinful, lustful, succubus looking to lead boys and men into debauchery.  They have been portrayed by husbands as nitwits to be made fun of, and by business as emotionally unstable hires that aren’t as dependable as men.

Now the government wishes to control their sexuality and reproductive life; going so far as to enact state mandated rape.

My question is: Females are over fifty percent of the population…and they have the vote…why is this an issue?

I’m just asking.

RHETORICAL QUESTIONS

SEX, SEX, AND MORE SEX

Sexual progressive cultures gave us literature, philosophy, civilization and the rest, while sexual restrictive cultures gave us the Dark Ages and the Holocaust.
225,000 years of Erotic Freedom
By Alan Moore Abrams

What the hell is wrong with these people?   Rush raved about young women promiscuously having sex, sex, sex; while Santorum declared that sex should be for procreation and not for pleasure.

As a red blooded male I can’t see any downside to women willing to have sex.  For me, that has always been a situation much to be desired.

One more Axe to grind:  Young men in high school that get laid by a good looking teacher and then complain…what kind of bullshit is that?   That would have been my wildest dream and highest aspiration when I was a teen ager.

STATE SPONSORED RAPE OF WOMEN

STATE RAPE

The Republican Party of the state of Virginia is about to pass a law requiring all women applying for legal abortion service to undergo, even against their will, an invasive vaginal ultrasound probe, which is medically unnecessary.

Any woman who is coerced into vaginal penetration against her will is experiencing rape.

The Republican Party of the state of Virginia is legislating state rape.

GAY MARRIAGE - THE SOLUTION

THE RIGHT OF GAYS TO MARRY AND THEIR INTRENCHED OPPONENTS

The U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco, in a 2-1 decision, overturned Proposition-8: a California Constitutional Amendment declaring ‘marriage’ as a union only between one man and one woman; which effectively nullified California’s law allowing gay and lesbian couples to ‘marry’.

This ‘marriage’ impasse has at its core the goal of Christian churches attempting to impose their moral doctrines on the population at large.

The Mormon Church heavily funded, in a covert religious movement, California’s Proposition-8.   The Catholic Church has also been a prime mover in de facto-bigotry against the gay and lesbian community.   In Maine, the Catholic Church of Portland was a primary opponent (along with fundamentalist fanatics) in defeating the Equal ‘Marriage’ Amendment proposed by the Maine Legislature.

I would like to propose my own amendment:

The Ol’Buzzard’s Get Rid of ‘Marriage’ Amendment.

1. The Federal Government should only recognize Domestic Partnership Licenses.

2.  Only Domestic Partnership Licenses can be issued by states, and these licenses have all the rights and legal protection now provided by a ‘Marriage’ License.

3.  After receiving a Domestic Partnership License couples are free to affirm a religious covenant in the faith of their choice where they may receive a Marriage Certificate of affirmation.   However, these religious certificates will have no legal or binding authority outside of the religious institution of their issue.
