CONSUMER CAUTION

Many of the shelves in the Walmart stores here in Maine are empty.  It could be because of transportation problems, lack of staff at warehouse facilities or prior government policies…

The bottom line is: we cannot rely on the way things have always been – expecting things to return to normal.

We are living in the new normal.   I am not suggesting people dig a bug-out-shelter and imitate zombie preppers.

I am saying that it is prudent for people to build up a reasonable pantry.   Each time you shop you should buy in a few extras can goods or dried food…and toilet paper.

With the corona virus surge and thirty percent of the population refusing to get vaccinated, food and other supply chains could be interrupted again.  When a replay of the toilet paper stamped occurs you won’t be panicked.

Speaking of toilet paper, have you noticed that rolls used to be four-inches-wide, are now three-and -one-half inches wide?

  1. Lots of things are smaller than they used to be but are the same price! The ol' sleight-of-hand!

  2. I did not get out the ruler, I did notice the rolls seem smaller. I was thinking the inner core on some brands was larger diameter than in past too. And we wonder why some old recipes no longer turn out the same - 8 oz can of tuna is now a bit over 5 oz, etc. Actually, it seems to me that cutting the size to keep the price the same ends up costing me even more, since I need to buy multiple packages now. GRR!

For a long time, we've been trying to maintain a decent pantry. We were more concerned with storm related things.

  3. Yeah, having a reasonable sized pantry is a good idea for reasons you state….. and just for convenience too. If you have a reasonable pantry, you do not have to go to the store if you are not wanting to deal with the hassle any given night or two or three either.

You mentioned crock pot beans as being too much……. if you have not tried it….. most every type of beans we make will freeze really well….. so they can be thawed and reheated for other meals. At least in the types I make in the crockpot there is no loss of texture or flavor after freezing.
