AND THEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE

Richard Engle, NBC’s Chief Foreign Correspondent who has covered the Middle East for the past twenty years, has just put out a book titled:

AND THEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE,

This is a must read book for anyone wishing to understand the complex issues of the Muslim world that seriously affect the rest of the global community.

Engle begins with a history of the Middle East and the factors that have led to the religious fanaticism that has co-opted the Muslim faith.

He accounts a fascinating story of his own immersion into the Arab culture; and reveals his understanding of the political, social and religious beliefs driving the violence of today’s complex and diverse Middle Eastern Muslim societies.

Usually when I am reading at night my mind will start to blank out and I know it is bed time.  I started Engle’s book and had to force myself to lay it down and go to bed at midnight.

Again; a must read to be intelligently informed on a part of the world that is holding hostage, with a threat of violence, all free thinking people.

BRING BACK THE DRAFT II

I am some sick of seeing people who have never been to war crying out for expanding the war in the Middle East.

It also pisses me off to see Vets line up in a knee jerk reaction protesting people who are protesting wars (Women in Black were protested by a veteran's group in Farmington, Maine.)

I am of the band of brothers; but I am also a rational thinking individual.    Supporting the military does not mean that you have to support wars – especially not unnecessary wars.

In Vietnam we lost 58,479 military brothers and sisters for absolutely nothing – we lost that war.  Now, the death toll is climbing in the Middle East with exactly the same predictable outcome.

The Middle East is enmeshed in a religious war between Sunnis and Shiites that date back over fourteen hundred years – there is no resolution that can be achieved by American military might.

The new drive by the Republican hawks in Congress is for a war with Iran (the last invasion worked out so well.)  Their ‘all or nothing’ demands for negotiating a nuclear build down of the Iranian nuclear armament program is aimed at scudding the talks.   Like most Tea Party brain farts the results has not been thought through.

Our volunteer military is stretched to the limit with back to back deployments that destroy military families and result in high percentages of PTSD among our active duty as well as veterans.

If our politicians are insistent on escalation and redeployment of troops then we should bring back the draft so that everyone has a commitment in the fight.   Only then would we see politicians reined in by an outcry from the people.

SUNNI vs SHIITES

Shiites and Sunni have been at war for the past fourteen hundred years, but for the last fifteen years the United States (motivated by oil interest) has inserted itself into the fray; and in the process destabilized the entire Middle East.

CBS Sunday Morning gave a quick overview of the religious/ geopolitical factions involved and the crazy alliances the US has committed itself.

This is a Religious Civil War that needs to happen; but we cannot extract ourselves, because our commitment is not to one side or the other - but to oil.

It doesn't have to make sense: it is Religion. '

DAMNED IF YOU DO AND DAMNED IF YOU DON’T

The President spoke about the United States’ obligation to respond to the threat posed by ISIL.   The fact is – there is no good option.   The Middle East is a quagmire of religious strife.   Regardless of what the US does; how many military die; how much it cost; there is no good, lasting solution.  The Sunni and Shia Muslims have been at blood war for over a thousand years, and nothing the US can do will change that.

Colon Powell told the Bush administration that ‘if we break it we will own it.’   And, we broke it.

Saddam Hussein maintained a balance of power throughout the Middle East and when the US invaded Iraq and removed Saddam it unleashed the sand storm of ethnic violence.

Even though we were the initial cause of the problem with our Nation Building, defeating ISIL should not be our responsibility.   The neighboring Shiite countries endangered by ISIL have the primary responsibility to band together and confront their mutual enemy.  But it is not likely they will act when they can wait on the United States to step in and expend its wealth and manpower to confront their enemy?

The US has no loyal allies in the Middle East.   No Muslim country will align itself with what, in the Middle East, is viewed as a Christian nation and the Great Satan.  They will gladly accept foreign aid and military aid, but they can never be counted on as a staunch ally.

Saudi Arabia is a perfect example.    They overtly align themselves with the US.   Saudis work with the US to stabilize oil prices; they depend on the US to protect oil shipments in the Persian Gulf; they hold major investments in US companies; they have the fourth largest group of international students studying in the United States; many of their military officers are trained in the United States; and they have made huge purchase of high tech US military equipment.

In return Saudi Arabia has opposed the State of Israel; they have joined in oil embargoes against the US; they opposed the invasion of Iraq; 15 of the 19 hijackers that attacked the Twin Towers were Saudis; and, according to the US State Department wealthy Saudi donors constitute the most significant source of funding for Sunni terrorist groups – including ISIL.

We must ask ourselves: Does ISIL pose a threat to the United States?  And the answer, of course, is ambiguous: ISLIL does not pose an immediate threat to the United States, but may in the future; however, it poses a present and immediate threat to the surrounding Shia nations in the Middle East – yet they choose not to act militarily.

So what do we do?   We are damned if we do and damned if we don’t.

I AM SOME DISGUSTED WITH THE HUMAN RACE

We are off and running again.

We have a crazy genocidal group marching through northern Iraq killing thousands of the civilian population at random and at will.   Shootings, crucifixions, beheadings, and hangings: it seems absolutely appalling what cruelties one group of humans is capable of inflicting on another - this time in the name of religion.

Nationalistic, religious and ethnic genocides have existed since the earliest recorded time.  People drunk on religion, patriotism or racial hatred are capable of atrocities without regret.   I remember my own attitude in Vietnam: ‘Kill’em all and let God sort it our.’

We never get to see the true depth of our own involvement, because we are a super power and winners of conflict get to record the history and whitewash their own actions.

This of all weeks, the anniversary of our own genocidal carnage in Japan in 1945, we are brought again to witness the baser nature of mankind.

The President says we must act and I suppose we must.   No one in this country (with the possible exception of John McCain) wants to put boots on the ground.

This is a no win situation – there is no military solution.   Humanitarian aide and targeted airstrikes can help; but we are taking a risk, for a downed American aircraft and the execution of the pilot will set up a Nationalistic cry and attitude for revenge and reengagement in this waste land of death.

Here in our own country we have parents screaming hatred and threats at bus loads of children on our southern borders; people willing to kill abortion doctors or gay men; we have state sanctioned executions of prisoners; random gun violence across the nation, and it is not too many years removed since we had public hangings spectacles in courthouse squares in the south.

This is who we are.  It’s not the new world, but the old world recycled with new players and modern technology.

I am some disgusted with the human race.

ZEN OF APATHY

A passenger aircraft shot down in the Ukraine.
There is nothing I can do about it.
800 dead in the 18 day conflict between Israel and Hamas.
There is nothing I can do about it.
Fighting continues in Iraq and Pakistan.
There is nothing I can do about it.
Fighting in Syria, atrocities in Africa.
There is nothing I can do about it.
Russia, Cuba, China;
I am powerless.
A dysfunctional U.S. Congress
Prisoners inhumanely put to death in Oklahoma, Ohio and Arizona.
Obama Care is being challenged in court.
Bigotry, Racism, Sexism, Homophobia…
I vote but my vote is canceled by the Tea Party.
Beyond  my control.

In my mid-seventies, my days are limited, the grim reaper rides bitch on my bike.
It is what it is.

Today I am going to prepare the west side of my house for painting.    I painted the front (south side) first of the week.   I have one more cord of wood to order and stack for winter fuel; and I plan to replace the front storm door before winter sets in.   I haven’t meditated in a long time.   I need to take a few minutes this morning for Zen time.  It is suppose to be a beautiful day today – sunny with temps in the low seventies.

Change what you can and accept what you can’t change: live in the moment: appreciate this day.
