In the Texas
GOP convention’s platform, they included secession from the United States. Why not?
Texas
receives far more federal aid and moneys than they pay in taxes, so if Texas were
to secede it would decrease our Federal Deficit.
Since Texans would no longer be citizens of
the United States we could stop all Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
payments; cease all financial programs and aid, and all U.S. government
support.
We could
finally justify a wall along our southern border, and require visas for all
Texas nationals wanting to enter our country.
We could
place tariffs on all goods coming out of Texas and all goods entering Texas –
again a windfall for our deficit spending.
We could
encourage Donald Trump to run for President of Texas, and be rid of a major threat
to our democracy.
We could do
a one-time payment for resettlement for all MAGA people wishing to become Texas
nationals.
I don’t see
any downside.

I find this
a particularly hard time to blog. The
MAGA world has brought violence and intimidation into the political processes
to an extent not seen since the Civil War; and the Supreme Court is moving the
country toward the fundamental Christian far-right. I fear I am seeing this country, its
stability I have always taken for granted, move toward becoming a fascist
theocracy.
(Fascism:
a form of far-right authoritarian, characterized by dictatorial power, forcible
suppression of opposition, exultation of nation and race above the individual,
with a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader.)
This country
has a history of good things and terrible things, but it has always strived
toward a vision of democracy outlined in our Constitution.
I spent 22
years in the military. When deployed
among other nation’s troops I was always proud of the display of the Stars and
Stripes – the symbol of our country.
But that was
in the past. Now when I see our flag its
connotation is insurrection, rebellion and fanatical cult allegiance to a monumental
con-man and would be dictator. To me, the
American flag has now become the symbol of the destruction of the democratic
government that I have lived under for over eighty years.
Perhaps this
country is past its sell-by date.

Two-thirds
of Americas are temporarily outraged about the shooting of children in Uvalde,
Texas. This will pass as our collective
memories are short.
This carnage,
especially of young people, is appalling on the surface; but it is who we are. Since the early Homo Sapiens picked up stones
and wiped out the Neanderthal, mankind has been killing everything that
breathes on this earth, including its own species.
The only thing
that ever limits the carnage is the availability of weapons and the sophistication
of the weaponry.
Wars,
genocide, ethnic cleansing, retribution, retaliation, revenge, execution, jealousy. We are
creative in our cruelty: stoning, strangling, burning at the stake, hanging,
beheading, crushing, spiking, starving, drowning, stabbing, shooting…. And these are performed by organized mobs, be
they government, ethnic or religious groups; but it takes individuals to carry
them out. And we carry them out.
We glorify
war and we glorify veterans. We seek out
video games and movies premised on violence.
Is it any wonder, with the unrestricted availability of military
weaponry to our population, that young, impressionable, disturbed individuals
commit mass murder?
We are not
as outraged as we pretend, or the government elected by the people would outlaw
access to military weapons of mass destruction, and government officials that
obstruct would be replaced.
