The recent Yellowdog Granny
post contained a clip about the ‘Right to bear arms.” We constantly hear the idiot right parrot
the Second Amendment without actually understanding the context.
Ted Nugent Got deferment from military because he craps the bed. |
ARTICLE II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security
of a free State ,
the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
Adopted in 1791, the Second Amendment
was written for that time and place. In
1791 the United States
did not have a large standing army nor military reserve units as exist
today. In case of military necessity men
could be conscripted for a militia and would be expected to furnish their own
weaponry. Thus, in lieu of a standing
army it was important that citizens be allowed to own firearms – a right not
granted the average citizen of Britain.
The intention was never to
arm citizens for the eventual overthrow of the Constitutional government, but
to guarantee the ability to quickly raise an armed militia.
Today we have a standing
Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and Military Reserve Units and
a military industrial complex that could easily arm the entire world. There is no longer a need for the Second
Amendment: the need for citizens to own military style weapons does not
exist.
The Second Amendment should
be revised to allow citizens to own firearms for home protection and sporting
purposes – but restrict all large capacity automatic and semi-automatic
military style weaponry.
It is only common sense: but
there is the rub.

OB,
ReplyDeleteI agree. I own firearms designed for hunting. Actually, some damned nice artillery at that! I don't see where the 2d Amendment gives anybody the right to pack a 9MM into a church, school, Barnes and Nobels, or a Hooters - especially a Hooters! That ass breath that shot Congresswomam Gifford had a Glock 19 with a 33 round banana clip in it.
Now, the gun nuts from the NRA can raise all of the hell they want and they are not going to sell me on my anyone needs a 33 round clip! Or, a
AR-15 or AK-47 for that matter. Shit! Why not a MA-1A Abrams tank so you can blow away your neighbor because you dog took a piss on his tree?
Good post.

I have been around guns all my life - but military weapons are designed to kill people - same with extended clips: we don't need to own them. They appeal to the soldier wanna-bees with the militia mentality...and these are dangerous people.

Haven't been able to access your blog.

I loved that picture.as much as I agree, as long as the NRA keeps buying our congress, nothing will change.
ReplyDeleteunless someone shoots all the NRA lobbyists...hmmm, now there is a thought.
I like your ideas: I am sure their heaven is full of guns.

In 1775 the British marched on Lexington & Concord to seize the arms of the people. When the lawful government troops arrive in Lexington they found the local men waiting for them in the Lexington Green.
ReplyDeleteThey all had the same weapons.
Someone fired "the shot heard around the world" and things were never the same after that.
By 1783 the colonists had won their freedom from what had been the lawful government with their personal weapons.
The first amendment of the 'Bill of Rights', deals with religious freedoms, a free press, free speech & assembly. Things that had been curtailed by the past government, things that were important to this one.
The NEXT THING after they established those basic rights and forbid the government from messing with them made SURE that the weapons that had just been used by the people to free themselves would not be taken away.
It would be a lot easier to manage this population with out that pesky "Bill Of Rights" and it looks like they have been doing what they can to water it down over the years.
Think about it, the "shot heard around the world" in 1775 was fired while someone tried to enforce gun control.
The Second Amendment is about raising a militia. We now have an Armed Forces and there is no need for civilians to own guns that are designed specifically to kill people. We need to rewrite this Amendment. Quite often things become outdated and need a rewrite.

The intentions were to keep the slave owners in the fold and those 'well regulated militias" were really slave patrol militias to prevent the very valuable commodity of free labor from escaping and to keep the slaves in line. The last thing the new government wanted was a standing army capable of overthrowing it. That has devolved into speculation (and declaration by some) that even nuclear weapons should be allowed under the second amendment.
ReplyDeleteMany facets of an armed militia: the Whiskey rebellion...

It's amazing how people can twist meanings to suit their own prejudices.
ReplyDeleteDamn right. Look at the Bible.

Rob,
ReplyDeleteBack then we were talking muskets not friggin Bushmasters...
I ask you - how many gun laws have Obama signed or how many guns has he or the UN seized? If you need to pack a gun around to feel safe then it is time to change your playmates and playgrounds...

DeleteAs for the Second Amendment bullshit, I REMEMBER WHEN THE NRA WAS SANE!! Back when they were about hunter safety courses & shit. Not this bullshit about how anyone can buy any kind of weapon up to tactical nukes!! I agree that nobody needs large capacity clips or assault rifles. If you can't hit what you are aiming at with 4-5 shots, give up, you suck at shooting. (Any game starts running at the first shot and is gone shortly thereafter.) The only thing large capacity clips and assault rifles are good for is killing humans!!
