There was a
time, not long ago, that hysteria was the medical diagnoses for most female physical
and emotional problems: postpartum depression, PMS, headaches, discontent,
anger, insomnia, shortness of breath, pains and discomforts…
The
diagnosis of Hysteria for female illnesses was not discontinued by the medical
profession until 1952.
A must-see
movie – Hysteria
A comedy - Rated R (which means if you are too fucking fragile to watch adult content - switch over to the Disney channel.)
the Ol'Buzzard
Just another manifestation of misogyny -- one of so many.
ReplyDeleteA lifetime ago (circa 1990) a scholar of technology scandalized the electrical engineering community when her article on the invention of personal pleasure devices was published in the IIEE Transactions. I seem to recall that steam powered devices existed, as did ones operated by pedal power (i.e., connected to a drive belt from stationery bicycle). There may have been hand cranked ones, too. Doctors easily figured out how to relieve female patients, but there's only so many hand jobs one can perform before carpal tunnel sets in.
ReplyDeleteEver see "The Road to Wellville?" It features a doctor who is extremely popular with female patients thanks to his special technique in dealing with symptoms of "hysteria."
will watch...and Nan I remember that movie..
