HAPPY OLD NEW YEAR

Sensibly the new year began on solstice , the 22nd, with the increasing of daylight.

But Happy arbitrarily picked day for the New Year.

(Actually, you would think the New Year should begin with the beginning of Spring on March 21st.  That is the end of Ol'Man winter and the beginning of new birth - birds migrate, plants spring up from the earth, bears and other animals leave hibernation and there  is a new vitality felt by all that live close to the earth.   But, of course, calendars are a product of religion, and that tends to fuck up everything
 .)

Anyway, Best wishes to all
and to all a good night.

  1. Our family celebrates the New Year on the first day of spring. It's a party for two weeks and ends with a picnic. We also celebrate 3 birthdays that week. Can you say party hardy??:)

  2. Happy New Year, darlin. I celebrate the beginning of the year in spring too. It's just logical. But I say Happy New Year because I have friends that are, you know, not like us.

    1. It is logical; but people don't bother to think it out. Also it helps to not be hung up on religion.

  3. Religion would be more useful if it created holidays that would always give workers an extended weekend. If Easter were on a Friday or Monday I would find it a lot more believable. Maybe. Happy New Year!

  4. Jono, that seems to be the major function of religion here in France. The art of the 3/4 day week end! Also food....Pentecost=veal, Easter=lamb, Epiphany=Traditional filled gateaux with a little ceramic figure hidden inside...the person who gets the slice with the figure gets to wear a paper crown. They start selling the gallete des rois in November! I got a ceramic Zorro on horse back last year.
Happy New Year to everyone! I am not at all sorry to see the end of 2014!

    1. Aaah the foods in southern Europe; I love Portugal and the foods. The only permanently good things I can find about Christianity are the music it has inspired and the art.
