IS GOOGLE CHROME BIG BROTHER?

HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE?

I will be typing in my Microsoft Word with no internet connection on line when suddenly my internal disk drive will start to whurrr and a message will pop up saying that there is high CPU usage by Google Chrome.  The only way I have been able to stop this intrusion in to do an emergency shut down.   What the hell is Google Chrome downloading on my computer without my knowledge or consent while I am working off line?

I know that when we downloaded Google Chrome to our computer we have to accept their 'agreement' and that probably contains all sort of caveats allowing them freedoms with our personal information.  I have found pictures that I downloaded on my blog appearing in picture searches on Google.

OK, I know that anything I put on the web is fair game, but what is Google doing in my computer when I am operating off line?

This is pissing me off

  1. I may be way off, but that sounds more like you have picked up a virus somewhere, which has nothing to actually do with Google Chrome--except for it being the browser you have. I never had much to do with Chrome before, but since Firefox has been not cooperating with Flash videos lately (at least on my end) I have started using Chrome to publish blog posts and most of my other online stuff. So far, I haven't had any bad experiences with it, but I'm sure it may be coming.

  2. I use google Chrome all the time and the only time I get the "high CPU usage" message is sometimes when I'm watching a video online. You may have picked up a virus that turns your confuser into a Zombie.

  3. I have an updated Norton antivirus and have run a complete scan and am told the computer is safe.

The strange thing is that this has happened twice: both times when I was NOT internet connected. I have an older computer with Windows XP but everything other than this seems to be as usual.

    thanks for the inputs

  4. I highly recommend using the free scan that Trend-Micro has available. We had Norton on our first computer, and the first time we ran the Trend-Micro Housescan, it found all sorts of nasty things that Norton didn't detect. Bit-Defender also offers a free scan, but I haven't used it. Hopefully, it is just one of those glitches that happens to all computer systems at times.

  5. The best program Norton ever put out was one that deleted all vestiges of Norton programs from your computer. I use Kaspersky on the grounds that the Russians build most of the damn viruses so they ought to know how to get rid of them. If this is churning when you are NOT on line, that is curious.
I may have to switch to Chrome as Firefox is now the most useless browser ever. Crashes more often than Windows 98.
