After leaving
Alaska, my wife and I moved to a small town in western Kentucky. We were the only Democrats and surely the
only atheists.
In town, the
first person we met asked which church we belonged to.
It turned out
that the Methodists were at the top of the pecking order; they looked down on
the Baptists. The
Baptists looked down on the Pentecostals, and all three looked down on the
Catholics, who didn’t care because they knew they were the only ones going to
heaven.
It was just
assumed that we were Republicans because everyone was.
We had a
beautiful Civil War-era home on five acres of land; but after five years we
sold and moved back to Maine because the religious fervor was suffocating.
