I am guilty
of using cliches. It seems they are an
engrained part of our common speech. ‘I
don’t have a dog in this fight’ is one I have used often and in hindsight that
is regrettable. Any animals barbarically
killed for human entertainment is an atrocity.
That replacement, from now on, will be: It ain’t my circus, it ain’t
my monkey. I
really like that. Along with: What
do you expect? I’m fucking old.

Yes, we often use cliches without thinking very much about what they really say.
ReplyDeleteI would think it is still fine to use the “dog” alliteration. It has its own meaning now outside of its origins. I do like your new one too, though.

My friend Sveta who married a Canadian friend and has lived in Canada many years now always says, when she screws up an English expression, "I'm just a foreigner". Her English is better than mine but it is a handy excuse. I am old has worked for me many times too.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard your dog expression or the monkey expression. Not keen on either really. Monkeys don't belong in a circus either.
ReplyDeleteI like them ...not my circus not my monkey I have used a lot this past year and a half.
